Valentines Special: 8 Top-Grossing Nollywood Movies to See this Weekend

The Valentines season is around the corner and couples are looking to crowd the cinemas once again to see some top movies during this celebration of love. But apart from loads of foreign movies on the big set during the Valentine’s Day and season, there are 8 top-grossing Nollywood movies in the cinemas worth seeing.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN)s’ recent Box Office Rankings for February 7 – 9, 2020, these 8 Nollywood movies are at the moment, the best offerings and the most viewed on the big screen since their releases to the cinemas.

Though not all of these movies have love and romance plots, they are the most enticing, captivating and entertaining Nollywood movies right now, ditto for this Valentines season.

So, whether you just found love, you have been in love, or you are looking to find love during this season, take your pick from the summaries and trailers of these 8 top-grossing Nollywood movies for your valentine day delights:


1. Sugar Rush

This movie is defying all odds and breaking barriers. Ever since its ban from and return to the screens by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Sugar Rush is right on top of Nollywood’s movies even after staying on the viewer’s list for a 7-week period.

Sugar Rush, a satirical film which reflects Nigeria’s anti-graft war sees three sisters find $800,000 (N288 million) in the house of a corrupt politician. They then try to save themselves and their mother after losing the money by teaming up with questionable allies to race against the clock to return it to its owner who will stop at nothing to get back his stolen stash of cash.

Produced by Jade Osiberu and directed by Kayode Kasum, the movie bares some of the Nigeria’s societal flaws often associated with public officials.

2. Small Chops

Nigerian actress, producer, entrepreneur and TV personality; Chika Ike has her flick in the second position of our 8 top-grossing Nollywood movies to see this during this coming valentines.

Directed by Robert Peters, and co-produced by Serah Donald Onyeachor, Small Chops tells the story of an uptight business mogul; Casper who is drawn to Nikita, an afro dancer at a bar. The former pays for a weekend of private entertainment. Then things get awry due to Nikita’s ego and Casper’s domineering tendencies. These lead to unfortunate twists in the movie plot.

Small Chops movie stars Nollywood stars Eucharia Anunobi, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Hafiz Oyetoro (Saka), Nkem Owoh, Rachael Okonkwo, Toyin Abraham, Chika Ike, and British actor Max Cavenham.

3. The Legend of Inikpi

Mercy Johnson Okojie’s first produced full-length feature hit the big screens in Nigeria and Ghana on January 24. The movie features a cast of Nollywood big wigs such as Mercy Johnson Okojie, Odunlade Adekola, Paul Obazele, Sam Dede, Saidi Balogun, and others.

The intrigue of The Legend of Inikpi movie surrounds a revered Igala princess ‘Inikpi Oma Ufedo Baba’ who chooses to give her life for the freedom of her homeland. Inspired by ancient cultures of Igala and Bini Kingdoms, Okojie tells a prehistoric tale of two great kingdoms on the edge of war over a much disputed human sacrifice obligated by the gods of the royal throne.

4. Mati A Zazzau

After it was first screened at Filmhouse on February 7 at the Ado Bayero Mall, Kano, this Kannywood movie rose to the fourth on the ranking scorecard. It stars Mavin Records’ Artiste Hadiza Blell popularly known as Di’Ja who is on her debut movie outing.

Mati A Zazzau is a follow-up of the 2014 comedy film about two cunning brothers Sadiq and Lado who travel from village to village in the name of being Islamic clerics and defrauding the people they came across.

Also featuring alongside Di’ja are Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Adam Zango, Rika Dawa, Umar Gombe, Alhassan Kwalle, Zahradeen Sani, Garba Mohammad Bado, Hamza Talle and Rahama.

5. Dear Affy

This is a definitely a Valentines Day Special because it is a romantic comedy with a super plot twist and ensemble cast to rank as number five on the most viewed Nollywood movies in the cinemas.

The movie tells the story of a beautiful career lady engaged to the man of her dreams – a wealthy conglomerate who is into construction. Things turn sour when his fiance’s huge contract deal is hinged on having an amorous affair with a female billionaire contractor days to their wedding – information that filtered into the media leading to an intense battle between family and friends to save face.

Dear Affy offers remarkable character performances from Williams Uchemba, Hafiz Oyetoro, Faithia Williams, Toyin Abraham, Mawuli Gavor, Charles Inojie, Bimbo Ademoye, Chiwetalu Agu, Jide Kosoko Kehinde Bankole, Chinedu Ikedieze, Bimbo Akintola and others.

As directed by Samuel Olatunji (popularly called Bigsam), Dear Affy is a joint produced by 007 Global, Track and Dolly Productions, Aul Media Studios, Miss Tola Elatuyi and Inside Life Studios.

6. Merry Men II

Merry Men II is a continuation of the exploits of Ayo, Naz, Amaju and Remi who, now on a quest to save the day as they meet their match in four ladies who are on a bid for paybacks

Just after Merry Men II screened at the cinemas for 54 days in 2019, it managed to displace Sony’s “Jumanji: The Next Level” and then newly released “Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker.”

Produced by Ayo AY Makun and directed by Toka McBaror, the film stars Ramsey Nouah, Iretiola Doyle, Jim Iyke, Regina Daniels, Falz, BBNaija’s Alex Unusual, Williams Uchemba, Nancy Isime and Damilola Adegbite.

7. Your Excellency

Your Excellency, written and directed by Funke Akindele Bello conveys the story of Chief Olalekan Ajadi, a billionaire businessman and an unsuccessful politician. His political aspiration took a different turn when Ajadi is announced by a major party as its flag bearer when a social media crisis favours him.

The flick which had its release across 50 theatres since 13 of December 2019 and was ranked fourth highest grossing Nigerian film for the year 2019, stars Akin Lewis, Funke Akindele, Lala Akindoju, Shaffy Belo, Kunle Coker, Alex Ekubo, Eku Edewor and many more.

8. Efunsetan Aniwura

Efunsetan Aniwura is the biography of the life and times of a wealthy and powerful Iyalode of Ibadan (woman leader) who lived in the 18th century who was kind and generous to everyone she came across but turned the moment she lost her only daughter to the cold hands of death during child bearing. She then became mean and proud – two personal flaws that led to her downfall.

Directed by Bankole Bello, the story tells of historic heritage with their ancient locations in Ibadan and Ilesha which is a journey to discover motivating and thrilling Yoruba political and cultural accounts long hidden.

The movie which hit the cinemas January 31 is the work of Eropreston Ventures Production, the production outfit of Funmi Holder, a popular face in Tinsel, an MNET’s drama series on DSTV
