Breaking: Lagos Health Commissioner Confirms AMVCA Guest Positive of Coronavirus

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi has confirmed that the guest who attended the recently-held African Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) from the UK is positive of Coronavirus.

He also warned that attendees of the event held at Eko Hotels could have been exposed to the virus, and advised that they observe strict self-isolation and call the Coronavirus hotlines if they observe any of the symptoms.

In a tweet on Tuesday afternoon, Abayomi explained that attendees to the AMVCA are likely to have been exposed due to contact with one of the confirmed Coronavirus Covid19 cases.

In the tweet, the commissioner said: “I hereby notify you that all participants at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) held on14th March at @EkoHotels may have come in contact with one of the confirmed cases in Lagos and are most likely to have been exposed to #COVID19 Infection.”

“Attendees at the said event are therefore advised to: 1. Observe strict self-isolation, 2. Call our #TollFree line 08000Corona if they notice any of the #COVID19 related symptom and 3. Let’s #TakeResponsibility by practising #SocialDistancing to prevent the spread of the virus, Abayomi added.”

The news was widespread shortly after the movie awards that a guest at the event had opened up that he had the COVID-19 symptoms and also that he refused to alert health authorities in Nigeria as he held on that he preferred to be treated in the UK, where he was based. But later turned himself in, was examined and confirmed positive, according to reports.

Many Nollywood stars and entertainers were in attendance at the AMVCA’s 7th edition held at Eko Hotels & Suites.

The AMVCA prides itself ad Africa’s most prestigious celebration of film and TV talents. The awards ceremony is a yearly event organized by Multichoice Africa to recognize outstanding achievements in television and film.
